Two right hands put closely together. The character of oracle bone script (the first) shows us its concept-two people clasping their right hands revealing their friendship. To the seal script (the third), the left-and-right structure changed into up-and-down by keeping the same components. The regular script changes a lot, but the two components are two transformations of a right hand.

The character “友” pronounces the same with the “有”, but the have different meanings and usages. The former one has something to do with “posses”, while the later one is related to “friend”.
