English Translation:
Following the skyrocketing housing prices of some bigger cities in China, the word “fang nu”, meaning the slaves of houses, was coined and spread quickly around the country. Many people who have bought houses using bank loans have become entrapped in a lower standard of living than they planned, due to the burden imposed on them by their mortgages.
The central government has carried out several moves aimed at reigning in rising housing prices. However, so far they haven’t worked. The middle classes are bothered by the problem of whether or not to become a fang nu. One side deals with the problem of expensive housing prices by holding onto their money, avoiding real estate purchases altogether. The others are still active in the real estate market, asking “Do you think that the rate you save money at can exceed the rate of increase in housing prices?”
