It belongs to pictographs, words formed from things which can be drawn. Its original meaning is SUN. Its ancient scripts keep more features of a sun, a round circle with a dot inside representing the rays of the sun.


In modern Chinese we say “taiyang” （太阳）to refer to Sun. The predominant meaning of “日” have become “DAY.”


“日” is a radical, which is related to SUN or Bright when it forms combined characters. Please point out where ri lie in the following characters.
